The reservoirs and bodies of water of EC-AEL are prime recipients for erosion runoff and solid waste discarded by humans. Indeed, many of EC-AEL’s reservoirs are located near large urban centers, making them convenient dumping grounds.
Furthermore, the rapid, unregulated expansion of certain activities such as agriculture, market gardening, artisanal gold mining, and urbanization significantly contributes to the siltation of these water bodies.
It is within this context that AEL, together with its partners, is carrying out actions to protect and restore the reservoirs in its area. These actions include, among others:
- Demarcation of the water reservoirs in its area
By 2025, EC-AEL has 16 demarcated water reservoirs.
- Construction of stone lines
To date, AEL has built 17.429 km of stone lines.

- Revegetation of water reservoir buffer strips through reforestation
Between 2016 and 2025, approximately 64,420 seedlings have been planted, covering over 38 hectares of reforested land.

- Gully treatment
In 2025, the Liptako Water Agency has treated 52 gullies.

- Combating invasive aquatic vegetation
To date, 6 hectares of the EC-AEL’s water reservoirs have been cleared of aquatic vegetation.
